Dedication
This book stands as a heartfelt tribute to my late friend, Dick Kramer, an artist of unparalleled talent, and his equally remarkable wife, Ginny. Within the Kramer household, art was more than a passion; it was a lifeblood that gave birth to masterpiece after mesmerizing masterpiece.
Dick Kramer’s artistry is a spectacle to behold, with each piece more stunning than its predecessor. His extraordinary talent ignited my passion and inspired my unique approach to designing custom coins. These coins are so meticulously crafted and distinctive that they stand out in any collection.
My journey with Dick’s art began during my early military career when I was captivated by a pencil illustration so detailed it could be mistaken for a photograph.
From that moment, Dick became not just my source of inspiration but also my mentor. He was renowned within law enforcement and SWAT communities for his illustrative prowess. His most iconic creation, a pencil portrait of his son Steve during his service, is a cherished image within the Marine Corps.
Dick’s artistic legacy extends beyond these achievements. He holds more art credits in the U.S. Archives than any other artist, past or present. Among his notable works is a mural gifted by President and Mrs. Reagan to the city of Berlin. His influence continues to inspire me every day, pushing me to create, innovate, and transcend the ordinary.
Between 2010 and 2014, I had the privilege of collaborating with Dick on a project for a TACP unit. This marked the beginning of our business agreement to license his work for coin design, transforming his illustration into a commemorative coin.
In 2021, I embarked on an exclusive project with Dick and Ginny. We selected the top fifteen artworks from Dick’s lifetime portfolio and transformed them into a series of fifteen commemorative coins. Each design was carefully crafted to highlight different pieces of art, resulting in coins that are both visually striking and deeply meaningful.
These coins are not only a tribute to art but also a testament to the legacy of an extraordinary artist. They encapsulate memories and emotions, making each coin a tiny time vault capturing the moment in every coin. I was fourtanate enough to be able to present set 0001, of the 15 coin series, to Dick and Ginny in December 2021. That was a month before he passed away. I miss him, I’ll remember him and I’ll share his art with the world. I was humbled by his words....
“I’ve seen a lot of coins, most of them junk. This is without a doubt, the most beautifully rendered coin I’ve ever seen. This is from a drawing of my son Steve. It’s called ‘The Grunt’ when he was in the Marines. It’s probably the most famous drawing in the Marine Corps. We’ve seen it on everything from cups to shot glasses to covering a guys entire back as a tattoo, Ah, it’s amazing but you’ve done a great job.” - Artist Dick Kramer

Chapter 1:
From Trenches to Tech: The Remarkable Journey of Challenge Coins
n the rich tapestry of military history and beyond, challenge coins weave a captivating narrative of tradition and camaraderie. For over a century, these tokens have transitioned from simple keepsakes to potent emblems of unity and honor. The tale of challenge coins is as mesmerizing as it is multifaceted – an odyssey that begins in the battle-scarred trenches of World War I and culminates in the high-octane corporate arenas of the 21st century. The enduring allure of these coins underscores the tenacity of tradition, the quest for innovation, and the magnetic pull of belonging.
The genesis of challenge coins can be traced back to World War I when a wealthy lieutenant commissioned bronze medallions for his squadron. Embellished with their
squadron’s insignia, these coins quickly became a beacon of unity. The tradition gained a firm foothold in military culture when one such coin played a pivotal role in saving a captured pilot from a grim fate by verifying his identity.
The saga of challenge coins took intriguing turns during World War II and the Vietnam War. The “coin challenge” appeared from the fires of camaraderie and friendly rivalry, with service members daring each other to present their unit’s coin. Failure often meant footing the bill for a round of drinks, further tightening the bonds of brotherhood.
Challenge coins began to symbolize more than just a unit’s identity. They morphed into badges of honor, reminders of shared trials, and tangible tributes to accomplishments. During my 14-year tenure in a special operations unit, I saw the intense longing others had for our coins.
In the contemporary era, the reach of challenge coins has expanded beyond military boundaries. Corporations, government institutions, nonprofits, and social clubs have adopted the tradition, using them to celebrate service, memorialize events, and cultivate team spirit. Despite debates over designs, challenge coins continue to radiate positivity, supplying a physical testament of shared values and goals.
Today, the narrative of challenge coins leaps into the future with Gray Water Ops’ groundbreaking Smart Coin™. This patented marvel fuses traditional challenge coins with state-of-the-art Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. A mere tap of an NFC-enabled phone can transport you to a charity donation page or any chosen destination, transforming a static token of appreciation into an interactive tool capable of boosting fundraising efforts.
This revolutionary concept, patented in 2015, took six years to fully materialize due to technological limitations. But with NFC-compatible devices now ubiquitous, the Gray Water Ops Smart Coin™ stands as the first and only US utility patented challenge coin, signaling a monumental leap in their evolution.
From their modest origins in World War I to the tech-infused innovations of today, challenge coins to endure as timeless icons of unity, recognition, and honor. Their evolution mirrors the shifting dynamics of the groups they stand for. Still, their fundamental purpose – to honor service, commemorate achievements, and instill a deep sense of belonging – stays unyielding.
As a humble artist and innovator, I strive to honor their legacy with every coin design and every spark of my imagination.
Chapter 2:
Sweet Beginnings: The Making of a Candy Man
Nestled in the vibrant fusion of cityscape and wilderness, my birthplace Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, was a cradle of values that cherished family ties, academic pursuits, and individual growth. My childhood was a lively whirlwind of activities that piqued my curiosity and kept me engaged. Whether it was the brotherhood I found in the Boy Scouts, the thrill of the Civil Air Patrol, or my artistic exploration through photography, each experience was a steppingstone that shaped my character.
During my junior high years, the photography club became a creative sanctuary where I learned the nuances of processing and printing black-and-white films. I was the artsy A/V kid with a crush on the librarian, juggling my passion for sports and the performing arts alongside my interest in technical production duties.
Central Dauphin High School became a cornerstone in my formative years, bolstering my academic prowess and nurturing my enterprising spirit. Throughout high school, I earned the nickname ‘Candy Man’. Every morning, I would stock up on candy from a local store and sell them throughout the day. This early venture into business ran parallel to managing the school store and exposed me to the world of entrepreneurship.
My high school journey was also colored by the disciplined structure and camaraderie of the Civil Air Patrol. Serving as the U.S. Air Force’s auxiliary, our team became the lifeline during search missions for small plane crashes or missing persons. This experience was a thrilling deviation from my regular school routine and a first-hand glimpse into structured, team-based operations, which later became the bedrock of my military career.
Post-high school, my professional path mirrored my eclectic interests. I started as a school photographer, traveling across Pennsylvania and capturing student portraits. However, the monotonous repetition soon had me seeking a fresh challenge.
From internships at the Pennsylvania House of Representatives to management roles at McDonald’s and a local grocery store, every stint, though varied, offered invaluable insights.
A turning point arrived when I joined a security company as an armed guard and crossed paths with the 193d Special Operations Group. The friendships forged there led me to enlist in the Guard in 1990, a decision that profoundly affected my life. The military service instilled in me a deeper appreciation for teamwork, resilience, and shared goals. It was during this time that I met the stunning artwork of Dick Kramer, which ignited my passion for designing custom coins - tangible symbols of unity and honor within the military community.
My life, an amalgamation of my Harrisburg roots and military experiences, has significantly influenced my career trajectory, leading me to set up two successful custom coin businesses, the latest one being Gray Water Ops. It stands as a testament to my journey, a place where we continuously strive to innovate and elevate the tradition of challenge coins, pushing their boundaries into the future.
Chapter 3:
A Dual Mission: Combat Arms Training and The Dawn of the Counterdrug Program
Post basic training and technical school, my military career took an unexpected yet rewarding turn. I found myself at the intersection of two distinct roles - as a Combat Arms Training and Maintenance (CATM) instructor and as part of the emerging Pennsylvania Counterdrug Program.
My weekends were dedicated to the CATM, ensuring everyone was not only learning but also applying and qualifying with their duty weapon. However, my weekdays presented a stark contrast, immersing me in the compelling world of the Counterdrug Program.
In its infancy, the Counterdrug program was a tight-knit operation, where we embarked on missions to various airports and landing strips within our area. Our goal was clear - find drug trafficking patterns via planes, which needed diligent documentation of tail numbers at each airfield and close collaboration with federal agencies overseeing the program.
As the program grew, so did our responsibilities. We transitioned from airport checks to cleaning, boarding up, and sealing former abandoned homes turned drug houses – a chilling experience given the remnants of abandoned children’s toys often found amidst drug paraphernalia. This evolution culminated in the establishment of the Northeast Counterdrug Training Center (NCTC), a beacon of hope in the fight against drugs.
One moment that stays etched in my memory is 9/11. At the time, I was part of the tech team for a drug identification lecture in western Maryland. When pagers started sounding off in unison, it signaled the beginning of a tragic era.
The sound was surreal as the number of pagers going off grew and swept like a wave across the room. People gathered around any TV they could find, as they watched the events of 9/11 unfold.
Everyone headed back to their respective police departments to focus on the current event.
Playing multiple roles at the NCTC proved to be an invaluable learning experience. From preparing presentations for my boss to leaning out of helicopters for photo or video shoots, every day brought unique opportunities.
Our section ran the video room in the raid house, a special building wired with cameras in each room. These videos served as training tools, highlighting safety learning moments for the teams practicing their entry.
Amidst this whirlwind, I discovered another business opportunity. Inspired by Dick Kramer’s stunning artwork, I turned my artistic visions into 1.5” and 1.75” coins. These coins held value not because of their metal content, but because they symbolized the brotherhood of the organization minted in the design.
Creating original coin art after original coin art, for over 30 years ,has become my superpower. Each coin holds a noteworthy value based on who gave it, what it stands for, or the event it commemorates.
They were more than tokens of recognition; they were symbols of shared experiences and mutual goals.
The coin creation process was a meticulous endeavor, with each design element chosen to reflect our unit’s ethos.
For me, it was not just a creative exercise; it was an opportunity to reinforce our unit’s bond.
Chapter 4:
A Journey of Passion, Innovation, and Resilience
As my military journey advanced, I found myself at a crossroads. On one side lay the path of unwavering commitment to serve my community, a responsibility I cherished deeply. On the other, a burgeoning passion for creating challenge coins painted a bright canvas of joy and purpose. It was here, in this moment of clarity, that I saw a fusion of artistry and service. This revelation inspired me to inaugurate my bespoke coin company.
Quality Challenge Coins, an embodiment of my dreams and aspirations, was born in 2001. Our foundation was built on the pillars of exceptional craftsmanship, innovative design, and unmatched customer service.
Every coin we crafted was not merely a memento but a meticulously created piece of art, reflecting the spirit of the organization it represented. We also ensured affordability without compromising on quality, making our unique keepsakes accessible to a wider audience.
The first phase of Quality Challenge Coins was marked by tireless effort, sleepless nights, and a steep learning curve. Navigating the complex maze of entrepreneurship, our compass was our mission: to create distinctive, meaningful coins that fostered unity, pride, and identity.
In 2002, we reached a significant milestone. We were granted our first patent for a unique challenge coin display case. This groundbreaking design protected each coin in a clear capsule, allowing easy viewing from both sides without the risk of tarnishing them with fingerprints.
Our innovation soon caught the eye of Anheuser-Busch. Embarking on a thrilling collaboration, we were tasked with creating a challenge coin for the troops.
The product was a visually captivating and symbolic design that resonated deeply with the troops. This high-profile partnership propelled us onto a larger platform, solidifying our status as pioneers in custom coin design.
However, life took an unexpected turn in 2005 when I went through a divorce and “sold” the business.
During the ensuing hiatus, I ventured into the world of magic, opening a magic shop, and offering lessons. Despite my affinity for magic, it did not prove to be as financially rewarding as my coin venture.
In 2009, encouraged by a fellow servicemember, I re-ignited my passion for coin design and came on board with Gray Water Ops. I still had three years of my non-compete left so to wait it out, we started a t-shirt shop and started printing t-shirts for military units deploying.
We did not go back into the coin business until sometime in 2013. During the early years, I managed our T-shirt and embroidery shop we had opened in New Cumberland, PA. I was able to transform my artwork into T-shirt designs. However, the overhead costs and slim profit margins led us to close the shop in 2015.
Refocusing on my forte, I returned to designing and minting original coins. Back to basics, armed with
experience, resilience, and renewed enthusiasm, I was ready for the next chapter of my coin journey.
Chapter 5:
Transitioning from Military Life to the Craft of Coin Creation
Re-winding back to 2001, As I bid farewell to my full-time military career, I was confronted with a daunting choice that had the potential to reshape my life. The military was not merely a job for me; it was a community that profoundly influenced my perspectives and left an indelible mark on my identity.
In the mid-nineties, I transitioned from Security Police to apply for a graphic arts role that offered the prospect of a long-term career as an air tech or AGR.
The shift was a strategic move, given the uncertainty of budget approvals in my earlier program. The new position promised stability, something that was missing in my earlier tenure. Although I was part of the Pennsylvania Counterdrug Program, year after year, we held our breath, but the budgets were always approved, and orders were always extended.
My background in photography and art gave me an edge, and I was selected for the role of the newest graphic artist for the unit. One of the rewards of working full-time in the military was the support we received during activations or training periods. Our positions were secure no matter how long the deployments lasted.
The prospect of getting paid to attend art school courtesy of the military was a dream come true. I attended the Defense Information School at Ft. Meade, MD, a hub for all branches specializing in photo, video, graphics, illustration, and journalism. With prior experience in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, the art school felt like a vacation where I could experiment with various mediums. From traditional to digital art, my skills expanded and refined.
After graduating as an honor graduate from DINFOS, I found myself drawn to uncharted territories. The military had equipped me with a skill set that I could use beyond the confines of my regular duties. As the 1990s ended, an opportunity arose to design coins for other units within the 193d.
At the time, ordering challenge coins or knowing where to get them was a connection held by one man. I would do the artwork and send it to him, and he would order the coins.
The unit members made a connection during a deployment to Korea. While the unit was deployed in that part of the world, one of our guys found a mint that made challenge coins. He brought that connection back to the US and our unit ordered coins through this place exclusively for years. Well, until I started making them! This connection was passed to me when I started to become known as the go-to guy for challenge coin designs.
As the orders came in, each coin bundled in a plain zip lock bag, an idea sparked in my mind. Why not use the packaging as a branding opportunity? I decided to print a 2-color logo with my website and phone number on each bag, distinguishing my product from the myriad of cheap, poor-quality coins available on the market. There were low-quality, over-priced coins being made at the time.
With my ability to visualize how a design would translate into a minted coin and my understanding of the balance between color and metal in a design, I embarked on a new journey. A journey where I could create coins that encapsulate the values and beliefs of an organization.
This marked the beginning of my transition from military service to full-time coin designing.
As I ventured into the realm of coin design, one thing became a recurring nuisance - cluttered PowerPoint designs. There is an art to creating a coin, and it is not about packing in every emblem possible. The more you cram onto a coin, the less detail each element has. The constraint lies in the physical process of minting. Each painted detail needs a raised metal boundary or a well large enough to be filled with enamel using a syringe.
Understanding how soft and hard enamel works is critical. Soft enamel is used when the design has 3D details. It is applied to the recessed areas of the coin but does not fill up the wells. This creates a tactile finish where you can feel the metal walls as the paint is not flush with the surface.
On the other hand, hard enamel is for designs without 3D detailing where a smooth finish is desired. Here, the enamel is filled up to the level of the metal, baked, and then buffed for a flush finish.
With every coin I designed, my excitement grew. I was stepping out of my comfort zone, transitioning from military life to entrepreneurship. Despite the challenges that came with setting up a business from scratch, the opportunity to create something meaningful kept me grounded.
Coin designing was no longer just a job. It became a mission, a way to serve my community and honor the values instilled in me by my military service.
Each coin was a tangible tribute to an organization’s mission, values, and achievements – symbols of unity, pride, and shared success.
The world of coin designing was vibrant and enthusiastic. Artists, collectors, and organizations alike appreciated the unique art form of challenge coins. Collaborating on designs, sharing the narratives and inspirations behind each coin, and seeing their impact fostered a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
This transition marked a significant shift in my life. It was a journey of discovery, growth, and fulfillment. It allowed me to combine my passion for art and design with my commitment to service, crafting a career that was both personally rewarding and impactful.
The future is full of potential. There are endless possibilities for innovation, pushing the boundaries of what a challenge coin can be. I am eager to continue this journey, to keep learning, growing, and adding to the rich tapestry of stories and achievements encapsulated in challenge coins.
Chapter 6:
Serving Beyond the Canvas
The beauty of the journey as a coin designer is not merely confined to the crafting of intricate designs but extends profoundly into the realm of social impact and contribution. The year 2001 marked the start of this deeper dimension when the tragic events of September 11th unfolded. Amidst the shock and sorrow, a unique opportunity arose to use my craft for a greater cause - collaborating with the American Red Cross for a fundraiser.
This collaboration was more than just an assignment; it was a transformative chapter on my journey. It shaped my vision of how creativity can intersect with compassion and gave birth to an impactful model of fundraising that has since raised $143,401 for veteran-related charities.
The aftermath of September 11th ignited a global wave of compassion, as individuals sought ways to lend support and solidarity. As we embarked on this fundraising journey, an innovative idea took shape - the creation of a custom 9/11 challenge coin. The coins served a dual purpose: raising funds for the Red Cross and standing as symbols of the indomitable spirit of unity and resilience displayed in the face of adversity.
We meticulously designed each coin with the image of the Twin Towers on one side and the Pentagon on the other, encapsulating the narrative of strength, resilience, and unity that appeared from the ashes of the tragedy. Despite the digital limitations of that era, the response was overwhelming. The coins not only raised an impressive $85,000 but also served as cherished reminders of the collective effort to support the victims and their families.
This partnership with the American Red Cross underscored the transformative potential of challenge coins, not just as artistic tokens, but as catalysts for meaningful action. It redefined my role as a coin designer, reinforcing the belief that my craft extended beyond the confines of art - it was a tool for tangible impact.
This ethos of service extends into the core of Gray Water Ops.
The commitment to charitable causes has become an
inseparable part of our identity, whether it is crafting coins for fundraisers, donating to charities, or using our platform to amplify the reach of worthy causes.
As we navigate the future, we stay committed to transforming our craft into a beacon of hope, unity, and resilience, crafting not just coins, but symbols that echo the power of shared purpose and community.
Chapter 7:
The Magical Unfolding of Hershey Magic and Gray Water Ops
The birth of Hershey Magic is a fascinating tale that weaves together strands of creativity, innovation, and an enduring passion for the mesmerizing world of magic.
This extraordinary venture was conceived during a moment of introspection, as I found myself standing at a crossroads, contemplating the trajectory of my life’s next chapter.
Rather than appearing as a sudden brainwave, the idea of Hershey Magic was deeply rooted in my nostalgic childhood memories and a familial lineage connected to the captivating realm of magic.
My late great-grandfather, Ray DeWalt, was not just a professional magician but a true maestro of illusions, capable of spellbinding audiences with his enchanting tricks. Each visit to his house was like stepping into a magical wonderland. His living room would transform into a makeshift stage, and we, his eager audience, would watch in awe as he masterfully performed his magic tricks.
These performances sparked in me a love for magic early on, a passion so profound that I even packed a handful of magic tricks in my luggage when I left for basic training!
My favorite trick that my great-grandfather performed close-up, which just threw me over the edge, was a pair of scissors he had. He would take out the scissors and lay them on a table. Then he would take out a section of rope that was about three feet long. He would make a loop with the end of the rope and then pick up the scissors and cut the loop, leaving two pieces of rope.
He would hand the scissors to me, make another loop in the rope, and point at it for me to cut it, as he extended his arm closer to my reach. The scissors would not open. Did not budge a hair! No matter what I did, they would not open. He would take them back, open them with no problem, cut the rope a second time and hand them back to me. I still could not get them to open. He would do these 3 or 4 times and then throw them in his bag saying they work fine!
In 2005, armed with these fond memories and driven by a desire to spread magic’s joy, I embarked on an exciting new adventure – I decided to open a magic shop. Hershey Magic was more than a mere business venture; it was a vibrant platform that allowed me to connect with fellow magic enthusiasts and introduce novices to this intriguing art form. For about six years, I ran the shop, creating a community space that celebrated the mystery and allure of magic.
Simultaneously, my career path with Gray Water Ops was beginning to chart an exhilarating course. After spending years in various roles outside the coin industry, I embraced the role of Chief Operating Officer for the newly formed Gray Water Ops, LLC in November 2009.
This transition marked the onset of a thrilling new chapter in my professional journey, characterized by increased responsibilities, fresh challenges, and a treasure trove of opportunities for growth and learning.
From 2010 to 2013, I moved to the picturesque Ocean City, Maryland, where I juggled multiple roles. While steering the ship of Gray Water Ops along the beautiful bay, I also worked as a media consultant for a cluster of radio stations in the DE/MD Eastern Shore market.
These diverse roles supplied a rich tapestry of experiences, offering me glimpses into different perspectives and sharpening my skills in multiple business management facets.
Gray Water Ops set sail on a mission to revolutionize the concept of challenge coins. We were determined to push the envelope, innovating beyond traditional designs and functions. Our team broadened our offerings, integrating innovative technologies, creative design elements, and hidden surprises into our coins.
The result was a product line that transcended the status of mere keepsakes; they transformed into potent symbols of unity, recognition, and pride. Each coin we crafted bore a testament to our unwavering commitment to quality, creativity, and meaningful storytelling.
Reflecting on this journey, from the start of Hershey Magic to my ongoing voyage with Gray Water Ops, serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of passion, resilience, and innovation.
These experiences have been instrumental in shaping my career, fueling my drive to explore, create, and lead. As I gaze into the future, I am thrilled by the limitless possibilities that lie ahead, ready to embrace new challenges and continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
Chapter 8:
Charting Uncharted Waters - The Evolution of Fundraising with the Smart Coin™
The journey to create the NFC-embedded smart challenge coin was an extraordinary adventure, a voyage navigated by technological curiosity, innovative thinking, and an unwavering ambition to redefine the traditional concept of a challenge coin. This was not merely an upgrade—it was a groundbreaking innovation for the industry. By embedding an NFC chip within a challenge coin, we transformed it from a static memento into a dynamic instrument of interaction and engagement.
Embarking on this development process felt like setting sail into uncharted waters. Marrying NFC technology with a metal coin was like solving a complex puzzle that assessed our creativity and resilience at every turn. Our mission was twofold—to ensure seamless data transfer through the metal without compromising the aesthetic appeal of the coin. This required an intricate balance between functionality and design, pushing us to devise creative solutions that seamlessly blended technology with craftsmanship.
Navigating the patenting process was akin to traversing a labyrinth. Securing a patent was not solely about proving the novelty of our invention; it also entailed proving its practical application and commercial potential. After investing countless hours into meticulous research, drafting, revising, and consulting with patent examiners, we finally received our patent in 2015—a moment of exhilaration that confirmed our relentless efforts and solidified our status as pioneers in custom coin design.
One achievement that fills me with immense pride is the creation of the Smartphone Card Trick. This novel magic trick, powered by our Smart Coin™ technology, involved a magician magically revealing a chosen card on a spectator’s smartphone by simply tapping the phone to the Magic Smart Coin™. It was a delightful fusion of traditional magic and modern technology, highlighting the versatile uses of our NFC-embedded coins while captivating audiences with a sense of wonder.
However, the Smartphone Card Trick was more than just a clever magic trick; it stood as a testament to the potential and versatility of the Smart Coin™. From helping contact data transfer to becoming a key part in loyalty programs, the Smart Coin™ opened a world of possibilities. It revolutionized the way we perceive and use challenge coins, redefining them from mere tokens to innovative tools for engagement.
The birth of the Smart Coin™ stands as a landmark achievement in our journey at Gray Water Ops. It reflects our commitment to innovation, our passion for creating meaningful experiences, and our vision for the future of custom coin design. As we continue to explore new frontiers and push boundaries, we still are steadfast in our mission: to inspire, unite, and create impact through our work. We are excited about the infinite possibilities that lie ahead and are ready to continue redefining what a challenge coin can be and the impact it can have.
Chapter 9:
Revolutionizing Fundraising - The Story of Smart Coins™
The moment we secured the utility patent for our custom coin with an embedded microchip was a milestone of immense significance. This achievement was not merely a reflection of our dedication and innovative spirit, but it also served as a gateway to untapped possibilities for our vision of revolutionizing fundraising and charitable endeavors. With my background in marketing intertwined with my passion for coin artistry, I envisioned a unique application for this patent that could significantly amplify the donations garnered by any charity that employs it—a 100% guarantee of increased contributions. I welcome any challenge to this claim.
While the patented technology can be adapted for a multitude of applications, I am particularly excited about its potential to redefine the landscape of fundraising. A microchip-embedded coin is an innovative tool that not only bridges the gap between successive donations but also fosters a profound emotional connection between the donor and the cause. This is not just a keepsake tucked away in a drawer. It is a symbol of commitment and support, meant to be carried daily, serving as a constant reminder of the remarkable work eased by your charity.
Just like military members who carry their unit coin to show their connection, you too can now share your pride and support for your charity by carrying a fundraising tool that will help them raise more money. Isn’t that what every non-profit WANTS to do? Raise MORE money? This will do it.
The beauty of a coin lies not just in its visual appeal, but also in the tactile experience it offers. When you hold a Smart Coin™ in your hands, you are instantly drawn to its weightiness and thickness. Your fingertips trace over the raised 3D image, appreciating the intricate details and craftsmanship. But the real magic unfolds when you are about to return the coin, and you are told that the best part is yet to come. You are about to show them your magic trick!
Imagine being asked to tap your phone against the coin. As you do, the charity donation page appears on your screen, ready to accept your contribution with just a tap. This seamless integration of physical and digital experiences creates an impression, like the “puppy-dog close” in sales. The strategy is simple yet effective—once you place the puppy (or in this case, the coin) in someone’s hands, the product sells itself.
Each Smart Coin™ is custom designed for a specific charity. One side features a meaningful 3D high-relief image that resonates with the cause, while the other side proudly displays the charity logo in vibrant colors, sealed into the coin’s center. What sets these coins apart is the embedded NTAG 424 DNA NFC microchip. Programmed to launch a browser and load the charity donation page, this coin becomes more than just a token—it is a gateway to giving.
This patented innovation marked a significant breakthrough in the world of challenge coins. By integrating a microchip into our coins, we transformed them from mere tokens of appreciation into dynamic tools for engagement. Each coin could now store digital information, enabling it to interact with other devices, thus adding a whole new level of functionality.
The potential of this innovation was particularly game-changing for fundraising and charitable efforts. A coin was no longer just a symbol of donation—it became an interactive portal for continued engagement. With a simple tap of their smartphones, donors could access information about the cause they were supporting, see the impact of their contributions, or even make more donations. This interactive element added a new dimension to the fundraising experience, making it more engaging and impactful.
By programming the charity donation page directly onto the coin, each sold coin becomes a tool in the new donor’s hand, helping spread the word. It is multi-level marketing at a grassroots level, one person at a time. Put the coin in their hands, and the coin will sell itself, fostering an emotional connection with donors that keeps the charity top of mind with a growing network of brand ambassadors out working for you.
The power of a coin transcends its physical form. It can serve as an engaging conversation starter, transforming each donor into an ambassador for the cause they support. This tangible asset offers a unique opportunity to share the story behind it, the cause it underpins, and the impact of the donation. This interactive dynamic amplifies the fundraiser’s reach, extending it beyond traditional boundaries through word-of-mouth promotion.
The result? An engaging, impactful, and sustainable model of fundraising that promises tremendous potential for the future.
Imagine this situation: you are in an office with a hundred colleagues, and you are fervently enthusiastic about Saint Jude Children’s Hospital. You share your enthusiasm with everyone, encouraging them to visit the website and donate. While they might nod in agreement, only a handful will act. However, our patented innovation, the Smart Coins™, entirely transforms this scenario.
By equipping your donors with the Smart Coin™, they are continually reminded of the crucial work Saint Jude undertakes. They become brand ambassadors, promoting its mission and inspiring others to contribute. When they hand over the coin to someone, the tangible heft, thickness, and texture serve as potent reminders of the cause it symbolizes. The coin guides potential donors straight to the donation page, simplifying the donation process to just clicks.
Moreover, these microchip-embedded Smart Coins™ offer charities a novel way to engage with their supporters. The chips can be programmed to share updates, dispatch thank-you notes, or even extend invitations to extraordinary events. This constant interaction cultivates a deeper bond between charities and their supporters, fostering lasting relationships. The tactile sensation of holding the coin instills a sense of pride and belonging, further fortifying this connection.
Obtaining the microchip utility patent was not merely a professional milestone; it was a catalyst for change. It unlocked new possibilities for employing our craft to aid deserving causes, augmenting our ability to contribute positively to society. As we gaze into the future, we are eager to explore these fresh opportunities, guided by our core mission to inspire, unite, and effect change through our innovative creations.
However, this new phase did present a hurdle. We started the patent process around 2012-2013 and gained approval in 2015, but the smartphone technology was lagging. Only a limited number of Android devices were NFC-enabled, and Apple iPhones had restricted access to the NFC scanner.
With our product compatible with just half the devices, we had to bide our time until technology caught up. Today, most new phones come with NFC read/write capability, eradicating the problem of unsuccessful demonstrations due to outdated technology or inactive NFC settings.
Reflecting on Gray Water Ops’ progression and the inspiration and patent behind Smart Coins™, I see a path characterized by innovation, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to crafting meaningful experiences. As we look ahead, we are thrilled to continue this journey, driven by our mission to inspire, unite, and are effective through our endeavors.
Furthermore, the coin functions as an excellent conversation opener, transforming each donor into an advocate for their chosen cause. The physical presence of the coin during dialogues supplies a unique opportunity to share its backstory, the cause it aids, and the impact of the donation. This interactive part broadens the fundraiser’s reach, extending it beyond conventional limits through organic promotion. The outcome is an engaging, impactful, and sustainable fundraising model that holds immense potential for the future.
As a charity embarking on the journey of using the Smart Coin™ for fundraising, there are three key actions you should encourage your donors to take upon making their donation and receiving this innovative tool.
First, encourage them to keep the coin with them daily. By carrying it in their pocket, the coin serves a dual purpose – it is a constant reminder of the impact their donation has made to your cause, such as supporting the incredible work of St. Jude, and it keeps your organization at the forefront of their mind.
Secondly, urge them to use any opportunity they get to speak about your cause. If they find someone interested in St. Jude’s mission, for instance, encourage them to share about the organization and gauge if the person might be open to donating.
The third action is where the magic of the Smart Coin™ truly shines. When discussing your cause, ask your donors to place the coin in the listener’s hand. The weight, thickness, and feel of the coin add a tangible element to the conversation, increasing engagement and connection to the cause.
As the person admires the coin, continue to discuss your organization’s work and mission. These coins are made by the same company that makes them for military units and police departments across the US. They are authentic!
Now, imagine doing this with one hundred people in an office. Instead of just talking about your cause, you are putting the coin into the hands of one hundred potential donors. As they admire the coin, you acknowledge the magnificent work done by your organization. When they try to return the coin, you guide them to load the actual donation page of your organization - in this case, Saint Jude - on their phone.
In this scenario, you have effectively led one hundred individuals directly to the doorstep of donating, with the act of contributing only a couple of clicks away. This method brings potential donors as close as possible to the act of giving, harnessing the power of the Smart Coin™ and personal interaction to its fullest potential.
Chapter 10.
Personal Musings and Hobbies
While my career has been a journey of fulfillment, it is the personal pursuits that lend a sense of richness and balance to my life. Among these, scuba diving and artistry hold a distinct charm.
The magic of submerging beneath the water’s surface is an experience like no other. Each dive unfolds a unique adventure, revealing a world that stays uncharted. The sensation of weightlessness, the spectacle of vibrant marine life, the tranquility of underwater silence - it is a realm that ceaselessly captivates and inspires me.
Scuba diving transcends being a mere hobby; it is a source of profound lessons in patience, resilience, and reverence for nature. It serves as a stark reminder of our duty to safeguard our oceans and their abundant biodiversity. This passion for diving has even influenced my professional work, leading to the creation of diving coins for various individuals and organizations, including Life Waters, a non-profit organization dedicated to supplying diving experiences for disabled veterans.
In addition to diving, I hold a deep-seated admiration for art, comedy, and design. As the current manager of the Harrisburg Comedy Zone, I have had the privilege of bringing national comedians and special celebrity events to our stage for the past seven years. I derive immense satisfaction from easing laughter and creating memorable experiences for our guests. I appreciate the grind of the comedians, their ability to constantly refresh their material, and their courage to perform before an unpredictable audience.
We have seen significant changes at the club over the years, from ticket pricing to seating arrangements. Our commitment is to uncensored comedy, creating a space where comedians feel free to express themselves without restraint. We believe in the power of humor but also respect that it may not resonate with everyone. As such, we offer clear disclaimers about the nature of our shows and encourage those who might be offended to choose another form of entertainment.
My love for creativity extends beyond comedy and finds expression in art. Whether it is sketching, painting, or graphic designing, the joy of creating something original is unparalleled. This creative flair permeates my work at Gray Water Ops, where I can bring ideas to life through our custom coin designs.
I am also a fan of author Dean Koontz. I must admit, I had more time to read while I was in the military. On flights was always a suitable time to catch up on my favorite Dean Koontz novel.
Travel holds another special place in my heart. The thrill of exploring new terrains, immersing myself in diverse cultures, and creating lasting memories fuels my spirit of adventure.
These personal interests supply a soothing counterbalance to my professional pursuits, offering relaxation, inspiration, and equilibrium. As I continue to traverse the thrilling journey of life, I eagerly expect to discover new hobbies, nurturing existing passions, and delighting in the simple pleasures’ life presents.
However, what I truly aspire to do is enlighten non-profit fundraisers about a groundbreaking fundraising tool they should start implementing today. This patented product, exclusively offered by Gray Water Ops, comes with a 100% guarantee of generating more donations than traditional methods. If it does not live up to this promise, I offer a full refund on this book - and you can keep the book as well!
Chapter 11:
The Art of Fundraising – The Official Playbook to Maximizing Donations with Smart Coins™
In this pivotal chapter, “The Art of Fundraising,” we delve into a groundbreaking fundraising strategy that could redefine how charities engage with their donors. By using the power of our patented Smart Coins™, we transform every donor into an ambassador for the cause they support, thereby expanding the charity’s reach and potentially multiplying donations exponentially.
Let us paint a picture. You are deeply committed to a cause, let us say Saint Jude Children’s Hospital. In your office of a hundred colleagues, you enthusiastically share about Saint Jude’s lifesaving work. You urge them to visit the website and donate (Traditional Method).
But here is the harsh truth: despite their best intentions, the hustle and bustle of life get in the way, and most will forget to donate. If a couple of your colleagues end up donating, consider yourself fortunate.
Now, envision a different approach (Smart Coin™ Method): Saint Jude starts a unique fundraising campaign. For every donation of $100 or more, donors receive a beautifully crafted custom coin, symbolizing the invaluable work of Saint Jude. This is not just any coin; it is a Smart Coin™. It is designed to be carried daily, serving as a tangible reminder of the profound impact Saint Jude has on countless lives.
This coin is more than a keepsake—it is a conversation starter. Its weight and intricate design intrigue those who hold it, offering you an opportunity to discuss Saint Jude’s mission. And then, something magical happens when they return the coin. An NFC chip embedded in the coin, when tapped against a smartphone, instantly opens the donation page of Saint Jude’s website.
In this scenario, you’ve not only shared Saint Jude’s mission with a hundred people but have also put a tangible piece of that mission in their hands and, provided their phone has NFC, got them to load the donation page of the charity on their phone.
By allowing them to interact with the Smart Coin™, you have connected them to the cause and simplified the donation process.
This approach could yield 10 to 20 donations from those hundred interactions—a significant leap from the 1 or 2 donations the Traditional method might generate.
With a $100 donation, each donor receives more than a coin; they become a part of the fundraising movement. They become the first brand ambassadors.
Imagine if Saint Jude sold 10,000 Smart Coins™ at $100 each, with their first marketing launch. That is a staggering million dollars raised but that is not the impressive point!
Now, there are 10,000 individuals, each enthusiastic about Saint Jude’s mission, each carrying a Smart Coin™, and each eager to share their passion and the coin with others.
How many donations will come in just from the 10K out showing the coin to their friends?
This is not merely a fundraising tool—it bridges the gap between the last donation and the next donation, perpetually. It is a conduit linking one donation to the next.
The charity asks for three things from donors who want to be brand ambassadors:
1.) carry the coin
2) seize opportunities to share it
3) aim to inspire at least one other person to donate.
With this method, we have created a network of supporters, each actively contributing to the charity’s growth and success.
The following chapters delve deeper into this innovative method, offering insights and practical advice on harnessing the power of Smart Coins™ for fundraising efforts.
Chapter 12:
The Transformative Impact of Smart Coins™
Having acquainted you with our revolutionary fundraising tool, the patented Smart Coins™, in the earlier chapter, we now delve deeper into its practical application. This chapter will illustrate how Smart Coins™ can redefine fundraising campaigns and foster a unique engagement with donors.
The start of the Smart Coin™ was met with a surge of interest and enthusiasm. This innovative spin on the traditional challenge coin presents charities with an unparalleled opportunity to engage their donors and widen their reach. As we begin incorporating this novel fundraising strategy, the outcomes are hopeful.
Take, for instance, the first Pennsylvania State Police Smart Coin™ which was minted in honor of the fallen troopers killed in the line of duty. This coin is a two” matte gold finish with dark purple enamel. The PA State Police purple heart emblem is minted in 3D detail on one side. The other side has a white rose image over a background to resemble the color pattern, purple, white, and purple from the ribbon.
Behind the rose, in a recessed well in the middle of the coin, is an NFC tag programmed to launch the Pennsylvania State Police Memorial Wall website when a phone is tapped to it. The coin was exquisitely designed and well-received.
However, the impact of the Smart Coin™ is not confined to the financial realm. It cultivates a sense of community among the donors, fostering a personal connection to the cause, which is reinforced each time they hold their coin.
The Smart Coin™ serves as a perpetual reminder of the difference they were making, instilling a sense of pride and fulfillment.
This instance is merely one illustration of the transformative potential of the Smart Coin™.
Imagine a person in the military, and they have been collecting challenge coins for years. So many that they have them displayed on a nice challenge coin wooden display in their office.
Different people on base or visiting from other units are always in his office admiring his coins. He has one different coin. One coin that does something none of the other coins can do.
What if he showed that specific coin to everyone who asked to look at his collection? He could connect people to the charity all year long, as it sits in a collection of other coins. This coin will stand out and people will want to pick it up!
The Gray Water Ops Smart Coin™ - The challenge coin which continues to give back.
The gift that truly keeps on giving! If you have ever actively wanted to participate in a fundraising effort but did not have a lot of money to donate yourself, get a smart coin™ for your charity and help them by making connections with other people who may like one of the coins and the concept of what it represents.
As we persist in our innovation and evolution, our core mission stays steadfast: to use our ability in coin design and technology to aid charities in effecting change. Through the Smart Coin™, we aim to revolutionize the world of fundraising, one coin at a time.
In the forthcoming chapters, we will delve into insights on maximizing your fundraising campaigns’ impact and supply tips on effectively using Smart Coins™ in your charitable endeavors. So, stay tuned and prepare to revolutionize your fundraising strategy with the power of the Smart Coin™.
“Military members worldwide carry custom-minted coins daily to showcase their connection with their unit. It fosters camaraderie and shares a mutual respect for the organization minted on the coin.”
Yeti does not sponsor me, (wish they did) but if they had a challenge coin, I would carry it! I love their drinkware. Keeps drinks cold for a ridiculously long time!
Chapter 13:
Maximizing the Impact of Your Fundraising Campaign
After seeing the transformative power of the Smart Coin™ in action, you might be wondering how you can harness this innovative tool to maximize the impact of your own fundraising campaigns. In this chapter, we delve into the strategies that can help you use Smart Coins™ most effectively, ensuring that your fundraising efforts not only reach but exceed your goals.
Crafting a Compelling Story: A successful fundraising campaign begins with a compelling story. The story behind your cause is what connects potential donors to your mission. When designing your Smart Coin™, ensure that it captures the essence of your story, serving as a tangible representation of your cause.
Creating an Engaging Design: While the NFC technology embedded within the Smart Coin™ is a key selling point, the design of the coin itself plays a crucial role in attracting donors. Collaborate with our in-house graphic design team to create a visually appealing coin that resonates with your audience.
Leveraging social media: In today’s digital age, social media is a powerful tool for spreading awareness about your cause and your fundraising campaign. Encourage your supporters to share images of their Smart Coins™ on social media, sparking curiosity and driving traffic to your donation page.
Building a community: The Smart Coin™ does more than just raise funds; it fosters a sense of community among your donors. Encourage your supporters to carry their coins with them and share the story behind them. This not only promotes your cause but also strengthens the bond between your donors and your organization.
Tracking Success: Use the data generated through the NFC chips to track the success of your campaign. This can supply valuable insights into donor behavior and engagement, helping you refine your strategies and maximize your fundraising efforts.
Continual Engagement: Remember, fundraising is not a one-time event but a continuous process. Keep your donors engaged by sharing updates about your cause, recognizing their contributions, and inviting them to be a part of your ongoing journey.
By integrating these strategies into your fundraising campaign, you can use the full potential of the Smart Coin™. But remember, every cause is unique, and so is every fundraising campaign. Do not be afraid to think creatively and tailor these strategies to suit your specific needs.
As we move forward, we will continue to explore new ways to enhance the Smart Coin™ experience, driven by our mission to help charities have influence. In the next chapter, we will delve deeper into the world of innovative fundraising. Stay tuned!
Chapter 14.
The Future of Fundraising - Advancements and Visions
As we have seen in the earlier chapters, the Smart Coin™ is poised to make a significant impact in the world of charitable fundraising. But as with any innovative technology, the journey does not end here. As we look to the future, we envision further advancements that will continue to enhance the Smart Coin™ experience and revolutionize how charities connect with their donors.
Personalizing the Donor Experience
One area where we see immense potential is in personalizing the donor experience. Imagine a future where each Smart Coin™ is not just a symbol of the cause, but a personalized token of appreciation. The NFC chip could link to a customized thank you message from the charity, making each donor feel personally acknowledged and valued.
Real-Time Impact Updates
We also envision enhancing the real-time updates provided by the NFC chip. In addition to linking to the donation page, future Smart Coins™ could provide donors with real-time updates on the impact of their contributions. This could range from photos of a school being built to videos of rescued animals being released back into the wild.
Expanding Reach
Looking ahead, we also aim to expand the reach of the Smart Coin™. While the coin is already creating a ripple effect, we believe there’s potential to turn this ripple into a wave. By partnering with more charities across a wider range of causes, we can bring the benefits of the Smart Coin™ to more donors and make a greater collective impact.
Exploring New Technologies
We are always on the lookout for emerging technologies that have the potential to enhance the Smart Coin™ experience. Whether it is integrating with cryptocurrency platforms to enable digital donations or using augmented reality to deliver immersive storytelling experiences, we believe in staying at the forefront. These advancements could help broaden the appeal of the Smart Coin™, attracting a younger, more tech-savvy generation of donors.
Collaborating for Greater Impact
We also plan to amplify our impact by forging partnerships with like-minded organizations.
By joining forces with other innovators in the fundraising space, we can combine our strengths and bring the power of the Smart Coin™ to a larger audience. These collaborations could open new avenues for fundraising, enabling charities to reach donors in innovative and impactful ways.
Continuous Innovation
At its core, the future of the Smart Coin™ is one of continuous innovation. We are committed to constantly refining our technology and our strategies, driven by feedback from our charities and their donors. We are excited to continue this journey with you, and together, we will revolutionize the world of fundraising.
